Why register my child for flag football? Great question! Girls flag football with the Lake Zurich Flames is a terrific way to get your child outdoors, active, and learn the fundamentals of the game in a safe and fun learning environment. Girls Flag is one of the fastest growing sports in Illinois and the Flames is a direct feeder program to the Lake Zurich High School Girls Flag program.
Are there age and weight restrictions? If your child is entering 3rd through 8th grade for the 2026-2027 school year, they are eligible to play girls flag football with the Lake Zurich Flames.
When does the girls flag football season start? Monday, August 3rd is our first official day of practice for the 2026 season. Practices will be 2-3 times a week in the evening for 90 minutes most likely at Manor Park in Lake Zurich. Opening weekend is August 29/30. All games are determined by the TCYFL and will be played on either Saturday or Sunday.
How are games determined? The TCYFL schedules the girls flags games at a neutral site. You may play a home game at an away site. The coaches will be sure to keep the teams updated on the game schedule as well as the schedule will be updated on the TCYFL website at www.TCYFL.net.
What kind of time commitment can my child expect? Girls flag football practices for between 3 and 4.5 hours a week (practices are 2-3 times a week for 90 minutes) with games being approximately an hour on the weekends. It is most likely that there will be 2 games played in a weekend back to back. The season will last 7 weeks with the last week being October 10/11.
How are teams formed? Is there a skill evaluation period for the young athletes? Teams are broken down by grade level. We anticipate this breakdown to be a 3rd and 4th grade team, 5th and 6th grade team, and a 7th and 8th grade team.
How can I register to coach a team? You can register to coach on the Registration page on our website. There is a link to signup for 2026 Coaching. Please get your name in early so that we have plenty of time to plan for the season. Teams will need as much coaching support as possible so please consider coaching even if it's one practice a week. NO EXPERIENCE NECESSARY!
What equipment is required? The Flames will be providing the jerseys and flags for the games and practices. Girls will be required to purchase game shorts, cleats, and mouth guards. More information to come regarding shorts for the 2026 season. Moore Orthodontics may be generously donating one mouthguard per athlete once the season begins.
